Sorry for the delay in getting out timely updates on the course
construction. Fortunately, it's simply been procrastination on my part,
and NOT lack of good NDG news to report that is the reason for the
delay!
We've actually accomplished a great deal this fall
installing the course and I want to say thank you to all the great NDG
volunteers who have come out to help clear and mow, and install the
teepads and baskets (and the teepad posts and frames). I'm happy to
report that we have 8 holes fully installed (except for the installation of the rubber on the short teepads) and open for play!
To sum up what we have done so far this year...
- finished up 2.5 years of permitting paperwork and began construction in April
- cleared, mowed, and opened all 8 north side holes (see current course map)
- installed the long teepads and the baskets on all the north side holes
-
installed the teepad posts & frames at the long & short teepads
on the north side holes (the metal map inserts should be arriving
within a month or so)
- installed an information board and bicycle rack at the parking lot
-
spoke at the New School, distributed discs to all the students there,
and subsequently played a few rounds with the New School kids (they are
amazing!)
The NDG volunteer crew will continue work on the
south side of the course throughout the winter, though I will be
off-island for the next few months. Our goal is to have the final 10
holes of the course fully installed and open for play by August 2012.
At the rate we're moving now, I believe we can accomplish that. With
that said, we're always in need of volunteers to help out with the
clearing, so come on out if you can! Contact our volunteer coordinator,
Brett Watts, at brett@nantucketdiscgolf.org for details on dates and times.
This
upcoming year, we are also planning on visiting and working with other
schools and youth groups on the island to promote disc golf as a
healthy, fun, inexpensive, family-friendly recreational alternative...as
with the New School, this will include disc giveaways to all the
children!
Once, again, a big thank you to all the NDG volunteers this year and happy holidays to everyone! We'll return with normal newsletter updates in the spring, but until then check out (and join!) our Facebook page for Brett's course construction updates throughout the winter.

Just an amazing day installing teepads. I want to say thanks to Chris and all the great hard-working families who came out as part of the community service group today. I told my wife that I thought even the kids today had more landscaping knowledge and experience than I had. Together as a group we installed one complete teepad and dug out three more. Will be out there tomorrow finishing out the dug-out teepads and perhaps digging out some more. Very exciting!

Back to work we go!
Will be at the course parking lot tomorrow (Monday) at noon to install some baskets. Come on out to help if you can. After the baskets are installed, we still need to install the teepads and signs, and most importantly we need to mow. If you have access to a heavy brush cutter (a skid loader or tractor with cutting attachment, or something of the sort) please let me know...we still have about 3-4 acres of HEAVILY overgrown land we have to cut before we can play.
Check our Facebook page for updates on which days we'll be out there this week...

Hello NDG Friends!
Almost done with the chipping...just a couple
of holes left. A big thanks to Sam and the crew for their hard work
over the past week.
Went out with my family and installed eight
of the basket sheaths in concrete earlier this week, so all that's left
is assembling the baskets, dropping them in the sheaths and locking them
up. Then we'll have eight baskets fully installed on the north side.
The final hole on the north side is yet to be cleared but we hope to get
that done within a month.
In
other news, we've awaiting the arrival of a sample of a rubber from a
company called Fly18. Fly18 is the premier maker of rubber teepads and
pending our being satisfied with the quality of the sample, it looks
like we will be purchasing 18 of these teepads for installation on the
north 9 holes of the course.
Finally, I wanted to let everyone
that if you haven't seen it yet, Nantucket Disc Golf was featured in
this month's N Magazine. A great article that sums up well what we're
bringing to the island...a fun, free, family-friendly recreational
alternative that can be enjoyed any time of year. Check it out...

It
turns out I'm headed off island for business for a couple of weeks.
Looking forward to returning in early October and to installing the
rubber teepads, and to mowing and getting the north nine holes open by
the end of the month.
